When you scroll through Glassdoor’s list of the UK’s top companies for work-life balance, the reasons employees cite for their rating consistently are because of the culture, work environment and flexibility of their employer.

There are numerous studies that show the importance of employee happiness, and how this contributes to workplace productivity. In a Harvard Business Review article on the value of happiness, Shawn Anchor, a world-leading expert on the connection between happiness and success says that “Happy employees are more productive, more creative, and better at problem-solving than their unhappy peers.”  Click here for full article by Danielle Brooker

From time to time, workers get drained. They don’t want to look at another report, computer screen, or spreadsheet. If your employees look like zombies at your small business, they might be suffering from low morale at work. It might be time to take a look at your company and boost workplace morale.

I’ve seen people with consistent low morale. Before I was an entrepreneur, I had an engineering job at a large, industrial manufacturing company. And on the factory floor, the workers absolutely hated going to their jobs every day. They looked like lifeless drones when they came to work at 7:00 a.m. If this sounds like your small business, you need to implement employee morale boosters.  Click here for full article by Mike Kappel

Six Ways Leaders Can Boost Employee Engagement — And Why It’s Important By Ochuko Dasimaka GenerationsHigh Performance TeamsLeadership

Imagine this: You are not sure what is going on, but you notice that your best employee has made some avoidable mistakes on the last two projects. You guess it must be stress related. However, two weeks later, your employee calls to say that he will be running late to work due to an emergency. “That seemed strange, but life happens,” you think to yourself. Over the next three weeks, this employee calls in sick about three times. Then, one morning, he walks into your office and gives you his resignation letter, stating that he has found another job. You are devastated — you did not want your best employee to leave. You wonder what you could have done to prevent it. You noticed the change in his behavior, but you failed to address it.  Click here for full article by Ochuko Dasimaka.

The Results Are In, And Current Employee Engagement Strategies Aren’t Working GenerationsHigh Performance TeamsLeadership

The latest statistics on employee engagement should grab the attention of all types of sizes of organizations. Eighty-four percent of workers are merely “coming to work” and are not contributing fully to their organizations (Hayes, Chumney, Wright & Buckingham, 2019). This is just one of the eye-opening insights from ADP Research Institute’s new Global Study of Engagement, the most definitive global study on engagement yet. One would have thought that the hundreds of millions of dollars being spent by companies on improving engagement would be having an effect, but the data is clear – the impact is minimal and in some countries, including the United States, engagement is dropping, not climbing (Hayes, Chumney, Wright & Buckingham, 2019). The authors of ADP Research Institute’s study say its time to address engagement in new ways, and I couldn’t agree more.  Click here for full article.

What is employee engagement? What is the measure of employee engagement in your organization?

Unfortunately, I hear leaders respond to these questions with answers based on either ignorance or denial. In other words, they either don’t really know (or care) what employee engagement actually is, or they are too afraid to consider that the level of engagement in their own organization may be low, and may be affecting their performance.  Click here for full article by Patrick Jinks.

Alternative: Reverse engineer their advice and improve recruitment at your business By Bill Murphy Jr.

More than two million people apply to work for Google each year, which is more than 20 times the number of employees at the company at any given time.

With that kind of volume, it makes sense that Google proactively tries to tell applicants what they should do to improve their odds of getting noticed within the herd.

Among its tools are a series of YouTube videos and articles detailing best practices for resumes (embedded below, along with two articles by Google’s former senior vice president of personnel operations). Click here for the full article
